This Summer sees the return of the World Illustration Awards to esteemed arts and events venue, Somerset House in London. The exhibition will take place in the Embankment Galleries from 31st July to 29th August, and will feature over 2,300 entries from 64 countries.
Categories will range from advertising and design, to books and editorial. Notable shortlisted works include: Claudine O’Sullivan‘s complex digital illustrations for the Apple Pencil campaign; Tony Rodriguez‘ characterful portrait of Bill Murray for the Washington Post; and Lizzy Stewart‘s playful illustrations for the book ‘There’s a Tiger in the Garden’.
According to Somerset House, ‘the exhibition offers an accessible introduction to illustration in its many forms, and demonstrates the importance of visual communication in everyday life.’.
Sponsored by Walker Books – the world’s leading independent publisher of English-language children’s books – the World Illustration Awards will team up with the publisher to offer the Walker Books Family Programme. A series of free family workshops will be on offer throughout August in the exhibition space by notable figures such as Alice Tait (award-winning author/illustrator) and Sav Akyuz (debut graffiti illustrator).
An environmental theme will also run through this year’s exhibition, with works including Cher Winner‘s educational animation made for CNN entitled ‘Econundrum’ – showing the environmental consequences of buying bottled water. Meanwhile, Sam Ki‘s ‘Yen Town – The Last Unpolluted Territory’ depicts a unity of humanity and the natural world.
The exhibition will be open from Saturday to Tuesday 10am – 6pm; Wednesday to Friday 11am – 8pm. Admission is FREE. Following its stint at Somerset House, the World Illustration Awards will tour the rest of the UK throughout the rest of the year.
