The Mall Gallery, SW1, will curate the prestigious Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition from 4th to 19 May.  Over 100 artists will be showcased, featuring the popularity of ‘commissioning painted portraits by institutions and individuals’.

Prizes awarded will include the sought-after Ondaatje Prize (worth £10,000); the Prince of Wales Award for Portrait Drawing; as well as the RP Non-Member’s Prize (new this year).

Begun in 1891, the society has been devoted ever since to the ‘art and development of portrait painting‘.  Indeed, the gallery says the selection of work from its members and from the open entry is a ‘fascinating barometer of current trends in portraiture’ and ‘holds a mirror up to life in contemporary Britain’.
