New kid on the block – The Chopping Block gallery, Peckham – is proud to welcome an upcoming exhibition ‘From Sarmatia to Star’ by Thom Trojanowski…
In an exhibition exclusively showcasing Trojanowski’s most recent works, ‘From Sarmata to Star’ serves at once as an insight into the artist’s ongoing interest in the Hermetic foundations of Polish culture – where his family’s heritage lies – and also as a playground for the artist to reveal his instinctive imaginings in the form of paint and sculpture.
Presenting itself as an imagined narrative, ‘From Sarmatia to Star’ sets out to become a visceral exploration of Trojanowski’s fascination with Polish helardric symbols and their historythat have informed his take on occultural knowledge and experience. In response to his findings, and drawing upon alchemical symbolism, the artist employs a playful, emotionally-charged and responsive approach to creating new meanings and possible futures through characters and scenes that flaunt the ways in which narrative can be formed and reinterpreted.
Directly acknowledging the space in which it is to be shown, ‘From Sarmatia to Star’ confronts its viewers with a central display of sculptural figures that respond precisely to the paintings that hang alongside them – together they are married, liberated by their symbols and signs As the heart of the exhibition in a world in flux, swaying between the real and the surreal in which deeper, more enlightening meanings are carried.
Thom Trojanowski is an artist based in the UK. He is currently developing his practise at Asylum Studios – situated at the old American air base, Bentwaters, Suffolk. Since graduating from UAL, Wimbledon, he has exhibited internationally, participated in residences and was included in The John Moores Painting Prize 2016.
‘From Sarmatia to Star’ will open with a private view on 16th August (6pm – 10pm), and runs until 1st September.
